About Qwan Ki Do

Qwan Ki Do is a Vietnamese martial art that integrates both traditional techniques and modern fighting methods. It combines elements from Chinese martial arts, including Kung Fu, and traditional Vietnamese techniques, offering a distinctive blend of striking, grappling, and weaponry. What sets Qwan Ki Do apart from other martial arts is its emphasis on fluidity, internal energy (Qi), and dynamic movement, alongside the focus on self-defence, discipline, and spiritual development. Unlike some martial arts that may emphasise either physical power or spiritual practice, Qwan Ki Do aims for a balanced approach, encouraging both mental and physical growth in practitioners.

Qwan Ki Do History

Qwan Ki Do was founded in the 1980s by Master Pham Xuân Tien in Vietnam. Drawing inspiration from his experiences in various martial disciplines, including Kung Fu and indigenous Vietnamese traditions, Master Tien developed Qwan Ki Do to synthesise combat techniques, philosophy, and inner development. The name "Qwan Ki Do" can be roughly translated to "the way of the harmonious fist", reflecting the art's focus on balance and energy. Over the years, it spread internationally, gaining followers across Europe and other parts of the world, and was formalised with the establishment of the International Qwan Ki Do Federation to promote its practice globally.

Qwan Ki Do Competitions

Competitions in Qwan Ki Do involve both combat and forms (known as quyens). In sparring events, competitors use a combination of controlled techniques in light contact, with an emphasis on precision, timing, and strategy. Unlike some martial arts, full-contact fighting is rare, and competitors are encouraged to demonstrate their skill rather than rely solely on force. There are also forms-based competitions where practitioners perform choreographed sequences that showcase their mastery of technique, balance, and fluidity. These events are judged based on technical execution, energy control, and style. Overall, Qwan Ki Do competitions are as much about demonstrating personal growth and discipline as they are about proving physical prowess.
