Learn About Kenpo

About Kenpo

Kenpo is a martial art that combines elements of traditional Chinese martial arts, Japanese Karate, and Hawaiian influence to create a system of self-defence that is both fast-paced and highly effective. Known for its wide array of techniques, including strikes, joint locks, kicks, throws, and grappling, Kenpo stands out due to its emphasis on fluid, dynamic movements and the concept of rapid-fire techniques. Unlike many traditional martial arts that focus heavily on a particular style of striking or a set of rigid forms, Kenpo is a versatile and adaptive system that encourages practitioners to quickly transition between offensive and defensive techniques. The art places a strong emphasis on using an opponent’s force against them, as well as leveraging body mechanics for maximum power.

Kenpo History

Kenpo originated in China, where it was initially influenced by ancient Chinese martial arts. The system was later adapted in Japan and then brought to Hawaii in the early 20th century, where it evolved further. The version of Kenpo most widely practiced today was developed by Ed Parker, who is often credited with founding American Kenpo in the 1950s. Parker blended traditional techniques with his own insights, focusing on practicality and efficiency for self-defence. He introduced new training methods that adapted the art for modern-day situations, emphasising speed, power, and versatility. The style quickly gained popularity in the United States, particularly among martial artists seeking a more dynamic approach to traditional karate. Over the years, Kenpo spread worldwide and has been adapted by various practitioners into different styles, including Kenpo Karate and American Kenpo.

Kenpo Competitions

Kenpo competitions typically involve both kumite (sparring) and forms (also known as katas). In kumite, competitors engage in controlled sparring, using a wide range of striking, blocking, and grappling techniques. Points are awarded for controlled, clean strikes to the body and head, and the emphasis is on speed, technique, and fluid transitions between movements. Forms competitions in Kenpo involve the performance of pre-arranged sequences of movements, where practitioners demonstrate their skill in executing punches, kicks, joint locks, and other techniques with precision and power. Kenpo forms are often designed to simulate combat scenarios, with an emphasis on quick, fluid movement and strong, decisive actions.
