Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Competitions
Competitions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are held in a points-based system, where competitors are awarded points for successfully achieving dominant positions (like passing the guard, achieving mount, or taking the back), as well as for executing sweeps and submission attempts.
BJJ tournaments, like those organised by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), are typically divided into weight classes, and matches consist of five-minute rounds for lower belts (white, blue, purple) and ten-minute rounds for higher belts (brown, black). The winner of a match is either the first to submit their opponent, or the competitor with the most points at the end of the round. If there is no submission or clear winner, a referee decision may be made.
