Learn About Aikido

About Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art primarily focused on using an opponent’s energy and movements against them, rather than relying on brute strength. The word "Aikido" translates to "the way of harmony with the spirit," which reflects its emphasis on blending with an attacker’s force and redirecting it through circular motions and joint locks. Unlike other martial arts that often prioritise strikes or physical dominance, Aikido practitioners aim to neutralise threats with minimal harm. It is distinctive in its use of fluid, flowing movements and its focus on maintaining balance, both physically and mentally. The goal is not to defeat the opponent, but to subdue them without causing injury, reflecting its deeper philosophical roots in peace and harmony.

Aikido History

Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba in the early 20th century. Ueshiba was a highly skilled martial artist who trained in various traditional Japanese fighting styles, including jujutsu and kenjutsu (swordsmanship), before developing Aikido in the 1920s and 1930s. He sought to create a martial art that emphasised spiritual and moral development, with an emphasis on non-violence and the protection of life. The practice was influenced by Ueshiba's own spiritual journey and teachings from his connection to the Omoto-kyo religion. Aikido's formalisation as a modern martial art came in the post-World War II period, when Ueshiba and his students began spreading it beyond Japan to the rest of the world.

Aikido Competitions

Training generally focuses on paired drills, where one practitioner plays the role of the attacker (uke) and the other defends (nage), but the goal is mutual improvement, not defeating the other. However, there are demonstrations and exhibitions where advanced practitioners showcase their skills, including techniques and randori (multiple attackers).
