About Aikido
Aikido is a Japanese martial art primarily focused on using an opponent’s energy and movements against them, rather than relying on brute strength. The word "Aikido" translates to "the way of harmony with the spirit," which reflects its emphasis on blending with an attacker’s force and redirecting it through circular motions and joint locks.
Unlike other martial arts that often prioritise strikes or physical dominance, Aikido practitioners aim to neutralise threats with minimal harm. It is distinctive in its use of fluid, flowing movements and its focus on maintaining balance, both physically and mentally. The goal is not to defeat the opponent, but to subdue them without causing injury, reflecting its deeper philosophical roots in peace and harmony.
